Are Canadian Homeowners Under Attack?

A UBC Professor wants YOU to pay even higher property #taxes 💰. Canadian homeowners, especially seniors, are increasingly being targeted for new wealth taxes, revealed in a recent Blacklock's Reporter* news investigation. 🗞️

The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) paid nearly half a million dollars to UBC Professor Paul Kershaw (also a BC government housing tax advisor) to study new housing "equity taxes" that would 𝗮𝗱𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. He claims seniors are "privileged" and should pay even higher taxes for home values that rise "while they sleep and watch tv." 💤 📺

Also impacted would be many with existing mortgages, young families, and renters who pay these tax costs indirectly through rent increases. 🏗️ Condo and rental apartment homebuilders who purchase single-family lots 🏡 would also pay those additional taxes, which are passed on to new homebuyers and renters.

FACTS:

➡️ Eight out of ten seniors in BC are homeowners but are struggling to keep up with rising costs, says the BC Seniors' Advocate, May 19, 2023.

➡️ Sixty-two percent of Canadians are struggling to pay bills and spend too much on housing. -Kelowna Now News Dec. 12/23

➡️ Despite Canada spending BILLIONS of our tax dollars on "affordable housing" the federal auditor said CMHC failed to track results. The now outgoing CHMC CEO admitted to a federal finance committee they had no “housing plan".
